Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing

 SciCoh Concussion Education Program (CEP)
Mission Statement:

At SciCoh, our primary responsibility is the safety of our players and cheerleaders, and concussions are a risk for both. Scituate Cohasset Youth Football will endeavor to prevent concussions and mitigate the effects of concussion, through:

1) Prevention. Education of coaches and athletes on proper technique, and the risks associated with improper technique.

2) Recognition. Education of coaches, athletes, and parents on recognition of concussion symptoms, including physical and emotional effects, and immediate steps to take.

3) Response. Education of coaches, athletes, and parents on the importance of baseline testing and adherence to the return to school/practice/play guidelines prescribed by family physicians.

SciCoh CEP Priorities

Concussion Awareness

1) On the first day of practice the SciCoh Board will introduce CEP, discuss what resources are available and explain the roles of player/cheerleader, coach, family and physician in the prevention, recognition and response to concussions.

2) Provide players/cheerleaders and families with brochures at equipment handout.

3) Define “concussion” as a brain injury with varying degrees of severity, explain some of the common symptoms and reinforce the importance of open communication between participant, coaches, family and physicians.

Concussion Prevention
SciCoh coaches will continue to reinforce the importance of good technique, while communicating the risks associated with using improper technique.

Concussion Education

1) SciCoh will introduce CEP to players, cheerleaders and their families.

2) SciCoh will provide information about concussion education on our website, with links to external resources.

3) SciCoh recommends that families contact their physician to discuss concussion related questions or concerns.

Concussion Screening
SciCoh recommends Baseline/ImPACT testing for participants that meet the age criteria.

Concussion Communication

1) SciCoh will communicate with our players/cheerleaders, coaches and their families if a concussion related event is suspected.

2) The SciCoh Concussion Education Program endeavors to follow the guidelines established by Massachusetts General Law Section 222 (Interscholastic Athletic head injury safety training program) and each participant’s family physician.
